William Agustus Ayres was born in Illinois on April 19, 1867. He moved with his parents to Sedgwick County, Kansas, in 1881. He attended Garfield University (now Friends University) in Wichita, Kansas and was admitted to the bar in 1893. He practiced law in Wichita and was clerk of the Court of Appeals of Kansas from 1897-1901. Ayres served as the Prosecuting Attorney of Sedgwick County from 1906-1910.
